We’ve developed a slight obsession with audiobooks at our house. Our kids are five and seven, and audiobooks have definitely become a huge part of our days. Here are a few of our favorite audiobooks:
I love audiobooks for a few different reasons, the main one being that the kids get to listen to awesome books and I get a break from reading aloud. 😉 (We read a LOT at our house.) We have some that we listen to for school, but most of our audiobooks are just fun and enjoyable for them to listen to.
We use both Audible (not the subscription, just a la carte via Amazon) and CDs. I only buy Audible audiobooks when they’re on sale; I highly recommend following Sarah Mackenzie at Read Aloud Revival, as she posts all the current Audible deals AND tells you how to go about purchasing them without an Audible subscription. Most of the Audible audiobooks that we’ve purchased were under $4.
Why do you need audiobooks in your life?
If your family loves books like ours does, branching out to audiobooks would probably be a good move.
When my kids are wild or especially loud, I find that simply turning on an audiobook calms the atmosphere. The wildness ends as they get sucked into a story. It’s like magic. Praise hands for that!
Plus, there are times when I just don’t feel like reading aloud. Audiobooks are really great for when mom needs a break from reading aloud. 😉
Audible or CDs?
Both!! I prefer to have a good mixture of both options. They’re both convenient for different reasons. I’m not one to put all my eggs in one basket. 🙂
We keep audiobook CD’s in the kids’ bedroom and they’re free to turn one on whenever they want during the day. They also listen to one every night at bedtime.
Audible is great for listening to audiobooks when we’re on the go. We have them loaded onto an old iPhone, so it’s really easy for the kids to navigate without me having to worry about something happening to our current phones or tablets. It’s also really easy to connect that device to a portable bluetooth speaker, which is a great option if you want to listen to audiobooks when you’re away from home.
