We are (finally) getting back into a homeschool rhythm after the holidays, which means my time of reading leisurely for hours at a time has sadly come to an end. It feels good to be back into a routine, I must admit. It’s a little bit harder to fit in my personal reading time now, but I’m managing.
I’m trying to read more fiction this year. I always have a huge stack of nonfiction to read; it’s harder for me to find fiction that I want to spend time on. I admit it: I totally, literally judge fiction books by their covers. I hate admitting that about myself. SO, I’m trying to expand my fiction horizons. We shall see.
What I Read This Week
The Blue Castle by L. M. Montgomery: LOVE. Lovelovelovelovelove. I didn’t even know this book existed until it popped up on my Instagram feed recently. Charming, engaging, utterly entertaining and the ending was perfection. L. M. Montgomery can do no wrong.
Verdict: read it!
The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey: Eh. I had REALLY high hopes for this one since it was on multiple people’s “Best Reads of 2017” list. It fell short for me. I loved the imagery and the descriptive passages. It made me remember why I love Alaska so much. I mostly enjoyed the characters. I just didn’t LOVE it. By the end I just felt a little puzzled and a lot underwhelmed. A good read for the middle of winter, but not anything I feel compelled to rave about. Verdict: skip it.
Family read aloud: We’re reading through Little House on the Prairie. It will probably take us a while to get through it. The kids wore out our Little House on the Big Woods audio book CD’s, and have moved on to Farmer Boy, so we’re reading this one aloud since we sadly don’t have the CD’s for it. (I couldn’t find the audio book on Amazon OR at cbd.com. Weird. And sad. We love us some Cherry Jones Little House audio books.)
