A moment of silence for small houses with little to no storage space.
Due to said lack of storage, we sometimes have to get creative when it comes to basic living functions. Take laundry, for instance. For years I used regular old laundry baskets, which was great on laundry day but totally inconvenient the rest of the week. Am I the only one who gets super frustrated with laundry baskets?! They’re big. They’re clunky. And they’re impossible to store away in a small house with almost zero storage space. WHERE IN THE WORLD DO YOU PUT THEM WHEN YOU’RE NOT USING THEM?!
I like to line dry our laundry whenever possible…it saves energy AND money. And clothes just seem fresher and cleaner when line-dried. I mainly needed laundry baskets for hauling things to and from the clothesline on laundry day. Finding a place to stash huge bulky laundry baskets when they weren’t in use was a pain in the rear.
I started to look for an option that took up less real estate in my house and decided to try using one of those huge, reusable shopping bags. (Ours is from Shop-Ko. The large blue bags from IKEA work great, too.) Let me tell you: LIFE-CHANGING. I haven’t looked back since. This laundry bag lightweight but strong enough to haul large wet loads out to the line, and when it’s not in use it can be folded up and stashed away until I need it again.
Now. A caveat for those of you who will try this.
We do live on the open prairie in the middle of nowhere, where the wind seems to blow nonstop. On an especially windy day this summer, I was outside hanging laundry and was down to the last item in my bag when the stinking wind hauled my precious Shop-Ko laundry bag clear out into the pasture.
We found it the next day hung up on the barbed wire fence at the edge of our acreage. So just word of warning. These lovely lightweight laundry bags could potentially be blown to the next county if you live in a windy area. 😉
